Jude Bellingham’s first season at Real Madrid was remarkable, featuring a flurry of goals and a Champions League title. However, his second season has yet to take off as he prepares to face former club Borussia Dortmund at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bellingham and Los Blancos triumphed over Dortmund in last season’s final, marking Madrid’s 15th title.

This year, the 21-year-old midfielder has struggled, partly due to increased defensive responsibilities following Kylian Mbappe’s arrival. In a recent 2-1 La Liga victory over Celta Vigo, Bellingham played on the right of midfield a new role that contrasts with his previous position as a central attacking figure. Last season, he scored 10 goals in his first 10 appearances but he has yet to find the net in nine games this season.

Frustrations surfaced during the Celta match when Bellingham appeared angry with Vinicius Junior for not passing to him. Coach Carlo Ancelotti defended Bellingham, noting that any tension was normal in competitive situations and that the players resolved their issues post-match. In the latter part of last season, Ancelotti tasked Bellingham with a hybrid midfield role to bolster Madrid’s defense which left him exhausted and battling minor injuries.

His performance at Euro 2024 was also below par, aside from a stunning bicycle kick goal against Slovakia. Despite these challenges, Bellingham remains a player of immense potential, having become the youngest captain of Borussia Dortmund and leading the team to a near title win.

As Madrid faces Dortmund and La Liga leaders Barcelona in crucial matches, Jude Bellingham aims to contribute significantly whether through goals or other impactful play. Ancelotti insists that Bellingham’s evolving role should be appreciated, highlighting the need for the team to find the right balance with its attacking options.
