Jurgen Klopp Rules Out England Role, Calls It a Compromise

Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager stated that taking the England job would be “the biggest loss of face in the history of football.” Klopp, 57, is among those linked with the England managerial vacancy after Gareth Southgate resigned following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Klopp stepped down from Liverpool at the end of last season, citing a lack of energy after nine successful years with the club.

During his tenure, he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. At the International Coaches’ Congress in Wurzburg, Germany, Jurgen Klopp clarified that no clubs or national teams have offered him positions. He dismissed the idea of taking on the England role, stating it would represent a significant compromise.

“England? That would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if I said I’ll make an exception for you,” he remarked. Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, also linked to the England position, confirmed that the Football Association has not approached him, and he remains fully committed to Newcastle. England will play their first match after Southgate’s departure against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.

The game will take place in Dublin as part of the UEFA Nations League. In addition to Howe, the England role has attracted other candidates including England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley, former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, who recently managed Bayern Munich. Despite his current break from management, Klopp has not ruled out a return to coaching.

He expressed a desire to continue working in football and contributing his expertise in the future. Liverpool appointed Feyenoord’s Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor.
