Lamine Yamal will sit out Spain’s upcoming Nations League match against Serbia due to a muscle strain he sustained during the team’s recent victory over Denmark. The 17-year-old Barcelona player limped off the field during injury time in the 1-0 win on Saturday. After the match, doctors performed an MRI scan which revealed no structural damage and confirmed the issue as a muscle strain.
In a statement, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) prioritized Yamal’s health by deciding to withdraw him from the squad to avoid any risk of further injury. Yamal faced multiple tough tackles during the game against Denmark. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente noted that the young talent must adapt to the physical demands of playing at the highest level.
De la Fuente remarked, “The referee has to protect these talented players, but Lamine Yamal has to get used to it.” He praised Yamal for his exceptional attitude and impact from the right flank, acknowledging his unique talent. “I had a teammate who used to say: ‘What do you want, kisses from the opponents?'” he added, emphasizing the need for players to endure physicality within the rules of the game.
To fill Yamal’s spot in the squad, Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo Riquelme will join the team. Yamal’s development is crucial for both his club and national team, and the decision to prioritize his recovery reflects Spain’s commitment to nurturing young talent while ensuring their long-term health.
