Luka Modric has been included in Croatia’s 24-man squad for the opening fixtures of their UEFA Nations League campaign. The Real Madrid captain, who will turn 39 in September has amassed 178 appearances for his national team since making his debut at 20 in 2006. There was some uncertainty about Modric’s future with the Croatian national team following their early exit from Euro 2024 this summer.

However, with teammates Domagoj Vida and Marcelo Brozovic both retiring from international football, Croatia’s head coach, Zlatko Dalic expressed his satisfaction that Luka Modric will continue to play for his country. Dalic praised Modric as a vital presence, both on and off the pitch, stating, “He is our great strength.” Modric, who signed a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid in July, remains a crucial player for both his club and country.

At Euro 2024, he started all three of Croatia’s matches, showcasing his enduring skill and leadership. Croatia, placed in League A of the Nations League will start their campaign with an away match against Portugal on September 5. They will then host Poland three days later. Modric’s inclusion in the squad underscores his ongoing importance to the Croatian team as they navigate this new international competition.
