Manchester City avenged their Wembley heartbreak from three months ago by defeating Manchester United on penalties to win the Community Shield. Both teams started cautiously with City’s James McAtee hitting the post and United’s Amad Diallo sparking a resurgence for the Red Devils. United dominated after the break and took the lead in the 82nd minute through Alejandro Garnacho, who fired a low shot into the bottom-right corner.

However, City responded as Bernardo Silva headed in an equalizer in the 89th minute, pushing the game to a penalty shootout. Despite Silva missing City’s first spot-kick, Ederson’s save from Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans’ missed penalty gave Manuel Akanji the chance to secure the win. Akanji converted the decisive penalty, bringing the Community Shield back to the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola fielded a youthful lineup, including 19-year-old debutant Nico O’Reilly and the returning McAtee. City’s attack was lively with Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb creating opportunities but United’s defense held firm. Substitute Savinho made an impact for City but it was Garnacho’s brilliance that initially seemed to decide the match for United.

In the end, Silva’s late heroics and Akanji’s composure from the spot ensured City started their season with a trophy, erasing the memories of their previous Wembley disappointment.
