Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola addressed speculation surrounding Julian Alvarez’s future, emphasizing that Alvarez remains an integral part of the team. Following City’s 4-2 victory over Chelsea at Ohio Stadium, Guardiola deflected questions about the 24-year-old Argentine striker, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.
Guardiola remarked, “No news. I don’t have anything to say. He will come back,” indicating that Alvarez’s future remains uncertain but that he is still a valued player. Sources have confirmed discussions between City and Atletico regarding Alvarez, though no formal bid has been made. Alvarez, whose contract with City extends until 2028, is currently competing for Argentina at the Paris Olympics.
He has indicated that he will decide his future post-Games. Guardiola expressed confidence in Alvarez’s return, stating, “I count on him. When he comes back, I’ll hug and congratulate him for the Copa America and the Olympics. We will start to work together.” Guardiola’s focus remains on City’s immediate fixtures, including the upcoming Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley and the Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge.
He added, “I have a thousand million things to think about the team,” highlighting his priorities beyond Alvarez’s situation. On the injury front, Manchester City concluded their US tour without major issues. Guardiola noted that Rico Lewis was substituted due to cramp and goalkeeper Ederson was rested due to minor “niggles.” Both players are expected to be fit for the Community Shield clash.
As Manchester City gears up for the new season, Guardiola remains focused on ensuring his squad is prepared for the challenges ahead.
