Marco Curto Receives 10-Match Ban for Racial Abuse

Marco Curto of Como has received a 10-match ban from FIFA with five of those matches suspended for racially abusing Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan during a pre-season friendly. The incident occurred in July during a match in Marbella leading to Hwang’s teammate Daniel Podence receiving a red card after a confrontation that followed the abuse.

Wolves reported the incident to the Italian Football Association and UEFA but UEFA stated it could not take action since it was not a UEFA match. However, the Korean Football Association intervened because Hwang represents South Korea and subsequently reported the incident to FIFA. A FIFA spokesperson confirmed that Marco Curto committed discriminatory behavior, resulting in the 10-match suspension.

Curto will have half of the ban suspended for a probationary period of two years during which he must also complete community service and participate in training and education approved by FIFA. Curto, 25, joined Serie B club Cesena on a season-long loan shortly after the incident with Wolves. Matt Wild, Wolves’ director of football operations, thanked the Football Association for their support during the investigation.

He valued their assistance during the entire process. He also remarked, “The suspension sends a strong message that racism and discriminatory behavior have no place in football or society.” Wild emphasized that this outcome demonstrates FIFA’s commitment to ensuring serious actions carry significant consequences. Wolves remain steadfast in their stance against racism and discrimination, pledging to foster an environment of respect and inclusion for all.
