Marseille have signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million) with a contract running until 2029. Greenwood, 22, emerged from United’s academy but has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022. He spent last season on loan at Getafe where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances, rejuvenating his career.

Authorities dropped serious charges against Greenwood including attempted rape and assault in February 2023. Despite these charges being dismissed, the Marseille mayor criticized the potential signing when it was first reported. Greenwood debuted for Manchester United’s senior team in 2019 during a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

Over his time with the club, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his first and only England cap in 2020. However, his time at United ended in August 2023, following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. The investigation concluded with a mutual agreement for Greenwood to leave the club. Marseille included a significant sell-on clause in their agreement with United.

The club will face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on 3 August at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. This match could mark Greenwood’s first game back in England since his arrest in January 2022, following the allegations and subsequent online publication of incriminating material. Greenwood born in Bradford, might find this match a poignant return to his hometown.

Manchester United extended their well wishes to Greenwood on their official website, reflecting a mix of closure and new beginnings for the player. Meanwhile, Marseille looks forward to integrating Greenwood’s talents into their squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
