Mary Earps, England goalkeeper, plans to leave Manchester United and sign with French club Paris St-Germain on a free transfer. The 31-year-old had been negotiating a potential contract extension with United but reportedly decided to join PSG when her current deal expires this month.
Earps joined United from Wolfsburg in 2019 and extended her contract in February 2021 until June 2023, with an option for an additional year. After United finished fifth in the Women’s Super League and missed out on Champions League qualification, Earps chose to move on.
This will mark the second consecutive summer in which United loses a key player on a free transfer, following Alessia Russo’s move to Arsenal last July. Additionally, United forward Lucia Garcia plans to join Mexican champions Monterrey on a free transfer when her contract ends.
United manager Marc Skinner faced some pressure from fans last season but secured a new one-year contract in May. PSG, where Earps is headed, had goalkeepers Katarzyna Kiedrzynek and Constance Picaud sharing duties last season, with Kiedrzynek making a crucial error in their title-deciding match against Lyon.
Mary Earps recently kept a clean sheet in United’s 4-0 win over Tottenham in the Women’s FA Cup final. Arsenal made an unsuccessful world record bid for her last September. Named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023, Earps played a pivotal role in England’s journey to their first World Cup final, playing every minute of the seven matches, conceding just four goals, and saving a penalty in the final, which England lost 1-0 to Spain.
The Nottingham-born keeper also played a key role in England’s Euro 2022 victory, helping the Lionesses secure their first major trophy.
