Mason Greenwood recently met with senior football figures at the club for “constructive discussions” about his departure from Old Trafford. Greenwood did not participate in United’s pre-season training, and he is unlikely to return soon. The 22-year-old visited the training complex to meet with the club’s football leadership team, including new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, to discuss finding him a new club.

This visit marked Greenwood’s first return to Carrington since serious allegations against him in January 2022 led to his suspension from training and matches. Although authorities dropped charges last year, Greenwood remained unavailable for selection. The club decided against reintegrating Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad and announced on August 21 that they had “mutually agreed” for him to continue his career elsewhere.

Last season, Mason Greenwood spent time on loan at La Liga club Getafe and reportedly attracts interest from Italian side Lazio and French club Marseille, managed by former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi. United has not commented on reports of a formal bid from Marseille, but talks are said to be at an advanced stage. In other news, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Tyrrell Malacia were absent from club pictures on the first day of training.

Rashford, who missed England’s Euro 2024 squad due to poor form, reportedly started training early to regain his form. Despite speculation about a potential sale, Rashford remains committed to United. Meanwhile, Sancho returned to Manchester after a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund and Malacia is recovering from an injury that sidelined him last season.
