Mauricio Pochettino Takes Charge of USMNT

Mauricio Pochettino former Tottenham and Chelsea boss, has taken over as the new manager of the United States men’s national team replacing Gregg Berhalter, who the US sacked after their early Copa America exit. The 52-year-old Argentine, who led Tottenham to the 2019 Champions League final and also managed Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, called the opportunity “one I couldn’t pass up.”

He emphasized that his decision went beyond football, highlighting the US team’s potential and passion, and expressing excitement to build something special for the country. US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker, who previously worked with Pochettino at Southampton, led the search for Berhalter’s replacement. Crocker called Pochettino a “serial winner” with a strong dedication to player development.

He praised Pochettino’s ability to build cohesive and competitive teams and expressed confidence that Pochettino will fully harness the potential of the USA squad. The team is currently ranked 16th in the world. Pochettino’s appointment comes as the US prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico. In addition to leading the national team, Pochettino will help improve processes within US Soccer.

European football expert Guillem Balague noted that big names like Rafael Benitez had also pursued the job but Pochettino saw the role as a great opportunity, especially with the upcoming World Cup on home soil. Mauricio Pochettino aims to bring much-needed organization to the team. Pochettino now joins Emma Hayes, another former Chelsea manager, who leads the US women’s team.

Balague added that Pochettino views this role as a significant project and a chance to apply his talents similar to his successful tenures at Espanyol, Southampton and Tottenham.
