Mikel Merino: Arsenal's Latest Transfer Target

Mikel Merino is at the center of Arsenal’s negotiations with Real Sociedad for the Spain midfielder. The 28-year-old, who played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, scoring a crucial goal against Germany in the quarter-finals has less than a year remaining on his contract. This situation could facilitate a deal, as he would be free to negotiate with other clubs in January.

Merino’s potential move to Arsenal would add an imposing presence to their midfield, complementing Declan Rice, who played a ‘box-to-box’ role last season. The 6ft 2in midfielder would provide additional competition for spots alongside Jorginho, Thomas Partey and Martin Ødegaard. His previous Premier League experience with Newcastle and his past collaboration with Ødegaard at Sociedad could benefit Arsenal.

Merino made 45 appearances last season, scoring eight goals. Arsenal’s transfer activity has been robust this summer. They have signed Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori for around £42m and sold Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for up to £34m. Additionally, the future of striker Eddie Nketiah remains uncertain. Marseille showed interest in him, but no deal has emerged.
