Mikel Merino Out for Weeks After Training Injury

Mikel Merino will miss a few weeks due to a shoulder injury he sustained during his first training session, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has announced. The 28-year-old midfielder completed a £31.6m transfer from Real Sociedad on Tuesday and suffered the injury after colliding with a teammate during Thursday’s training. Arteta confirmed that Merino has a “small fracture” in his shoulder which will take several weeks to heal.

Despite this setback, Arteta noted Merino’s enthusiasm about joining the team and praised his performance before the injury occurred. The manager expressed his disappointment over the timing, emphasizing that the injury happened just as Mikel Merino was beginning to integrate with his new teammates. “Yes, it’s very unfortunate,” Arteta said. “He landed on the floor, and Gabi landed on top of him. He was in a lot of pain, and we need to wait for further tests.”

This injury delivers a blow to Arsenal’s squad, as the club expected Merino to play a significant role this season. However, Arsenal has started the Premier League strongly, winning both of their opening matches against Wolves and Aston Villa. On Saturday, Arsenal will face Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, a team that has also won both of its league games so far this season.
