Olivier Giroud Scores in LAFC’s 3-1 US Open Cup Victory

Olivier Giroud, the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker helped Los Angeles FC clinch the US Open Cup with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City. The 37-year-old, who joined LAFC after leaving AC Milan at the end of last season, scored the opening goal in the 53rd minute, tapping in from close range. Sporting Kansas City equalized through Erik Thommy, pushing the match into extra time.

However, LAFC responded strongly with goals from Mexican defender Omar Campos and Sierra Leonean forward Kei Kamara sealing the win. This victory was particularly significant for Giroud, who retired from international duty in July as France’s all-time leading scorer with 57 goals. The win came as a welcome relief following LAFC’s defeat to Columbus Crew in the Leagues Cup final last month.

“I came here to win trophies and to play in finals like this,” Olivier Giroud stated after the match. “I felt really sad and disappointed for the team regarding the Leagues Cup. We’ve had a tough few weeks but we stuck together and wanted to win this trophy for the fans and the club. Scoring in this final means a lot to me and I’m so happy to help the team.”

With this triumph, LAFC remains in contention for a domestic league and cup double. Only three teams in MLS history have achieved this feat with LA Galaxy last accomplishing it in 2005, following Chicago Fire and DC United. Currently, LAFC sits fourth in the MLS Western Conference standings and is on track to secure a playoff spot, further enhancing their chances for additional silverware this season.
