In an emotional Instagram post, Varane expressed his desire to leave the game on a high note, stating, “I hold myself to the highest standard.

It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.” Varane began his professional career at Lens in France before moving to Real Madrid in 2011 where he enjoyed a stellar 10-year tenure winning 18 trophies including three La Liga titles and four Champions League titles. He transferred to Manchester United in the summer of 2021 for an initial fee of £34 million making 95 appearances despite facing injury challenges.

His time at United included winning the Carabao Cup in 2022 with his last match being the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Raphael Varane as a “legend of the beautiful game” and acknowledged his significant role in FIFA’s fight against racism. Cristiano Ronaldo a former teammate also celebrated Varane’s impactful career, calling him a “football legend.”

Varane made his international debut for France in 2013 and earned 93 caps contributing to France’s World Cup victory in 2018 and their Nations League win in 2021. Reflecting on his career, he stated, “I have won more than I could have even dreamed of… I hope I have made you all proud.” Varane highlighted the importance of addressing the long-term impacts of heading in football and emphasized the need for greater awareness and protection for players.
