Richard Masters, the Premier League chief executive, emphasized the urgency of resolving Manchester City’s 115 charges for alleged breaches of financial rules. An independent disciplinary commission will review the case which includes violations dating back to 2009. In an interview with BBC’s Dan Roan, Masters stated that resolving the case is essential for the league’s integrity.
He could not confirm the specific date for the hearing but suggested it might start next month, with a decision expected early next year. Manchester City, who deny all charges will face scrutiny as the case unfolds. Separately, City are challenging the Premier League’s new rules on ‘fair’ sponsorship deals but Masters avoided commenting on the confidential proceedings. The outcome of this case should be imminent.
Masters also addressed concerns about the Premier League’s financial regulations. With clubs like Nottingham Forest, Everton and Leicester facing issues under the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the league is exploring a new financial system resembling a spending cap. Masters emphasized the goal of removing “asterisks” from league tables and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
Regarding international football, Masters rejected the idea of Premier League matches being played abroad, despite FIFA’s ongoing assessment of such proposals. He stressed the need for consultation on the international match calendar to tackle player fatigue, as the Premier League, along with FIFPRO has challenged FIFA’s management of global fixtures.
Finally, Richard Masters acknowledged the ongoing VAR improvements including the introduction of semi-automated offsides. He highlighted the need to enhance the fan experience and address delay issues while collaborating with global bodies like IFAB and FIFA to refine the technology.
