Rodri Voiced Concerns Over Rising Game Demands

Rodri is expected to miss an extended period due to a knee injury according to manager Pep Guardiola. Doctors have not yet clarified the exact severity of the injury. Guardiola revealed that the club is still waiting for a final diagnosis with an update expected by Wednesday. Rodri sustained the injury during City’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Arsenal on Sunday. He twisted his right knee in a collision with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.

Guardiola substituted Rodri in the 21st minute of the match and he later traveled to Spain for initial tests. Further examinations will determine whether doctors will require surgery. Guardiola expressed uncertainty about Rodri’s absence duration, noting differing opinions from doctors. Some believe the injury may not be as severe as initially feared.

The 28-year-old Spanish international has played a key role for both Manchester City and Spain. Rodri was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024. He helped Spain lift the trophy and played a key role in Manchester City’s success last season. This success included winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Rodri recently returned from a hamstring injury and expressed concerns about the increasing number of games. He suggested that players are “close to” striking because of the demanding schedule. In contrast, they have lost 24% of the matches when he has been absent. Guardiola acknowledged the significance of losing Rodri, calling him “irreplaceable,” but emphasized the need to find a solution.

“When a team doesn’t play with the best midfielder in the world for a long time, it’s a big blow,” Guardiola said, adding that despite Rodri’s absence, the team must adapt and move forward.
