Rodrygo, the Real Madrid forward expressed disappointment over his omission from the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Despite an impressive season where he scored 17 goals and provided nine assists in 51 appearances, the 23-year-old Brazilian did not secure a nomination unlike his Real Madrid teammates Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.
Rodrygo conveyed his frustration to ESPN, stating, “I was upset, I think I deserved it. I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; they deserved it also. But I think I had a place in the 30.” The nominees are chosen by France Football’s editorial team in collaboration with Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba and selected media members. The award winner will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 28.
Rodrygo was part of the Real Madrid squad that clinched both La Liga and the Champions League titles last season. Alongside Bellingham and Vinicius, Real’s Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger and the now-retired Toni Kroos also received nominations. France striker Kylian Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain is also on the shortlist.
Rodrygo speculated that his versatility across various positions might have contributed to his exclusion. He noted, “Often, I’m just filling spaces. Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”
Despite his disappointment, Rodrygo remains committed to his role within the team.
