Roma have parted ways with manager Daniele de Rossi just four matches into the new Serie A season. De Rossi, who took over from Jose Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico in January, struggled to secure a win this season. Roma drew three of their league matches and suffered a home defeat to Empoli last month. After a 1-1 draw at Genoa on Sunday, Roma now sit 16th in the Serie A standings.
The club issued a statement explaining that the decision aimed to quickly get back on track. They emphasized that it was in the team’s best interest at this early stage of the season. They expressed gratitude to De Rossi for his dedication and passion during his brief tenure. De Rossi’s stint started promisingly as Roma lost only one of their first 11 league games and secured 26 points from a possible 33.
This strong start moved them from ninth to fifth place in the table. The team also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League before Bayer Leverkusen eliminated them. Last season, Roma finished sixth which earned them another Europa League spot. This season’s European fixtures include a notable match against Tottenham on November 28.
The club made significant signings this summer including La Liga top scorer Artem Dovbyk from Girona. They also added experienced German defender Mats Hummels on a free transfer. However, Roma also experienced several departures. Chris Smalling moved to Al-Fayha, Tammy Abraham joined AC Milan on loan and Romelu Lukaku, who was on loan from Chelsea transferred to Napoli.
Andrea Belotti, Rui Patricio and Leonardo Spinazzola also left the club recently. De Rossi, now 41 had a legendary playing career with Roma from 1997 to 2019, making 616 appearances. He also played a key role in Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning team. The Friedkin Group which owns 95.97% of Roma and had a failed takeover attempt of Everton in July continues to oversee the club.
