Sammy Harvey made his international debut at the age of 14 while most of his peers focus on homework and video games. The teenage goalkeeper started for the Turks and Caicos Islands in their recent Concacaf Nations League match against Anguilla whose starting goalkeeper was 41 years old. Despite the team’s 2-0 loss, Harvey remains optimistic for their rematch on Sunday.
After the defeat, Harvey expressed his disappointment, saying, “After the first game, I did cry, knowing that my first game was a loss.” However, with support from his coach, he quickly regained his focus and is eager to prove himself in the upcoming match. Harvey cites his national team coach, Aaron Lawrence as his footballing hero, admiring his past as Jamaica’s goalkeeper in the 1998 World Cup.
He also looks up to Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson. Harvey’s journey in football began at age five, initially playing as a left and right-back before transitioning to goalkeeper when coach Aaron joined his program. Remarkably, he is the third 14-year-old to represent the Turks and Caicos Islands following Christopher Louisy and Watson Jean-Louis, who are now 19.
Both players have supported him, emphasizing the importance of not letting the experience overwhelm him. Coach Lawrence credits the Concacaf Nations League established six years ago with providing young players like Harvey opportunities for competitive play. He aims to foster youth development in Turks and Caicos encouraging young athletes to remain engaged in football.
Although Sammy Harvey’s debut was challenging, he has plenty of time to improve. A devoted Liverpool fan, he dreams of playing for the club someday. Lawrence believes Harvey possesses the skills necessary for success, highlighting his catching ability, quick reflexes and confidence in leaving the goal line.
