Sven-Goran Eriksson made visits to several of his former clubs this year, including a trip to Lazio in May.
Sven-Goran Eriksson, the former England manager has died at the age of 76. The Swedish coach, who became the first non-British manager of the England national team, led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals in three major tournaments between 2001 and 2006. After his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Eriksson passed away peacefully at his home in Bjorkefors, Sweden.
Eriksson’s career spanned several decades during which he managed 12 clubs including Manchester City, Leicester, Roma and Lazio where he won numerous trophies. Internationally, he took charge of Mexico, Ivory Coast and the Philippines. He began his managerial career in 1977 with Degerfors in Sweden and found significant success with Gothenburg, winning the UEFA Cup in 1982.
His time with the England team featured memorable moments like the 5-1 victory over Germany in 2001 and he played a key role in guiding England’s “golden generation” of players. Despite these achievements, Eriksson’s tenure with England included off-field controversies and disappointing exits from major tournaments. After leaving England, Eriksson embarked on a varied career, including a stint with Manchester City.
He also managed Mexico and Ivory Coast before concluding his managerial career with the Philippines in 2018. Following Sven-Goran Eriksson’s death, tributes poured in from across the football world with former players, officials and fans celebrating him as a gentleman of the game. His children expressed how deeply he appreciated the support he received during his illness and Eriksson himself reflected on his life with gratitude in his final days.
His legacy as a positive and influential figure in football remains strong.
