Thierry Henry Resigns as France Under-21s Manager

Thierry Henry has resigned as manager of the France Under-21s after leading the team to a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics. The 47-year-old, who took on the role in 2023 with a two-year contract, decided to step down despite having a contract that would have lasted until after next year’s European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. Henry, a former Arsenal and Barcelona striker managed the French under-23 team at the Paris Games where they lost 5-3 to Spain in extra time of the final.

Reflecting on his tenure, Henry expressed immense pride in securing the silver medal. “Winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games for my country will remain one of the greatest prides of my life,” Henry stated. He also extended his gratitude to the federation, players, staff, and supporters who contributed to this memorable experience. The France Football Federation expressed regret over Henry’s decision, acknowledging that he had met the objectives set for him.

During his time with the Under-21s, Thierry Henry won four of his six matches and achieved a notable record with the Olympic team, winning eight of 11 games. His squad included overage players like Alexandre Lacazette and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Under Henry’s leadership, France topped their group with victories over the USA, Guinea and New Zealand, and advanced past Argentina and Egypt in the knockout stages before their final loss to Spain.

Henry, who earned 123 caps and scored 51 goals for France during his playing career, leaves the role after a successful period that enhanced his legacy as a manager.
