Tottenham Hotspur Fall to Bayern Munich in Pre-Season Opener

Tottenham Hotspur faced their first defeat of the pre-season, losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich before a sell-out crowd of 67,000 in Seoul. Despite featuring Son Heung-min, James Maddison and new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, Spurs struggled against the Bundesliga giants, who played without Harry Kane. Gabriel Vidovic capitalized on a mistake by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to give Bayern an early lead and Leon Goretzka extended their advantage after halftime.

Pedro Porro scored a 25-yard strike to pull one back for Tottenham but they couldn’t find an equalizer. Bayern also gave former Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha a run in the second half. Spurs will have a chance to seek revenge when they face Bayern again on Saturday, 10 August at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (17:30 BST). In other pre-season action, Newcastle lost 2-0 to Yokohama F Marinos in Tokyo with goals from Brazilian winger Elber and midfielder Jun Amano. Lloyd Kelly made his debut for Newcastle in this match.

Several Premier League clubs are currently touring internationally. Aston Villa will play Mexico’s Club America in Chicago on Saturday at 22:30 BST while Chelsea takes on Manchester City at Ohio Stadium, Columbus, at the same time. Manchester United will face Liverpool in South Carolina at 00:45 BST on Sunday. In Austria, newly-promoted Ipswich Town defeated Bundesliga’s Hoffenheim 1-0 but Leicester City, fresh from winning the Championship, lost 1-0 to Augsburg.

In England, new Everton signings Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom scored in a 3-0 win over Preston with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also on the scoresheet. Brighton secured a 1-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers, Southampton edged Millwall 1-0 and Brentford drew 1-1 with Watford.
