Trent Alexander-Arnold: Right-Back or Midfielder?

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s optimal position remains a topic of debate among fans, pundits and managers. As the 25-year-old gears up for Liverpool’s 2024-25 season under new manager Arne Slot, attention will focus on how Slot utilizes him. Alexander-Arnold has primarily played right-back for Liverpool but doubts about his defensive capabilities have led some to advocate for a midfield role, a position he has occupied for England in recent matches.

Former England defender Gary Neville praises Alexander-Arnold as a generational talent and ex-England boss Gareth Southgate commends his exceptional passing range. Although Alexander-Arnold missed Liverpool’s American tour, he started their final pre-season friendly against Sevilla at right-back, a position also impressed by Conor Bradley.

Alexander-Arnold’s early development saw him play various roles including centre-half and full-back. His transition to right-back accelerated under Neil Critchley with the Under-18s, leading to a standout performance that caught Jurgen Klopp’s eye. By January 2017, he had secured his first Premier League start.

Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer highlights the evolution of the full-back role, now akin to a wing-back with attacking responsibilities and occasional midfield duties. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s skills including his range of passing and creativity, have allowed him to excel as a playmaker from full-back. He has consistently ranked high in metrics like shot-creating actions and progressive passes.

Despite his strengths, McAteer notes Alexander-Arnold’s defensive limitations, which were exposed when he played centrally for England. McAteer suggests that Alexander-Arnold’s best role may be as a hybrid full-back, allowing him to operate in midfield when needed. Slot, who uses a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3 formation has yet to confirm Alexander-Arnold’s role but may opt for this versatile approach.
