Vincent Kompany was on the brink of a surprising move from Burnley to Bayern Munich. Despite Burnley’s recent relegation and limited victories this season, the 38-year-old remained highly sought after in football circles. Bayern Munich’s quest for Thomas Tuchel’s replacement witnessed rejections from Xabi Alonso, former head coach Julian Nagelsmann, and ex-Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.

Despite their efforts to persuade Tuchel to stay, Bayern’s discussions failed to change his decision to leave three months ago. Turning to Kompany, Bayern engaged in talks with Burnley chairman Alan Pace regarding a compensation fee, aiming to finalize the deal soon. Vincent Kompany, who spent two seasons at Hamburg before joining Manchester City in 2008, is fluent in German and his football philosophy has reportedly impressed Bayern’s hierarchy.

However, the move is seen as a gamble for both parties after their underwhelming seasons. Bayern’s failure to secure the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012 contrasts with Kompany’s tarnished reputation following Burnley’s 19th-placed finish. This development deals a significant blow to Pace, who had envisioned Kompany leading Burnley’s promotion charge from the Championship. Burnley’s board had placed considerable trust in Kompany, even deferring recruitment decisions to him. However, relegation followed despite significant summer spending exceeding £90 million.

Burnley had been considering hiring a new coach to work alongside Kompany for the next season with Ashley Cole, currently at Birmingham City, among the potential candidates. Cole’s success with England’s Under 21s, notably guiding them to victory in last summer’s European Championship, made him a standout option. Kompany’s departure poses a challenge for Burnley, likely prompting player sales ahead of their return to the second tier. Goalkeeper James Trafford attracts interest from Newcastle United, while Jack Cork and Johann-Berg Gudmundsson have left after contract expiry.
