Francisco Conceicao scored the decisive goal as Portugal dramatically secured a late victory against the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener in Leipzig. Despite falling behind to Lukas Provod’s stunning second-half strike, Portugal guided by coach Roberto Martinez showcased their determination and resilience. The Czech Republic defended throughout the game but shocked Portugal when Provod’s powerful shot found the far corner of the net.

However, their lead quickly evaporated as goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek parried Nuno Mendes’ header, which led to an own goal by Robin Hranac. Although officials disallowed Diogo Jota’s goal for offside late in the match, Portugal clinched the win in stoppage time thanks to Francisco Conceicao’s close-range finish. This match marked a significant moment for Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who celebrated his appearance at a record sixth European Championship with a memorable win.

Portugal entered the tournament in excellent form, having won all their qualifying matches. They dominated from the start, keeping the Czech Republic on the defensive. Despite creating several opportunities, they struggled to convert them with Stanek making crucial saves including denying Ronaldo twice in the first half. Stanek also saved Ronaldo’s trademark free-kick and officials ruled him offside when Jota converted his cross late in the game.

Nevertheless, Portugal’s persistence paid off with young star Conceicao, aged 21, scoring the match-winner. For the Czech Republic, who entered as underdogs, this performance offered both heartbreak and hope. Under coach Ivan Hasek, appointed in January, they had remained unbeaten leading up to the Euros. Their solid defensive display and unexpected lead against a tournament favorite were commendable.

Although they couldn’t secure a draw, this performance provides encouragement for their upcoming Group F matches against Turkey and Georgia.
