Gareth Southgate’s emphasized that England must reach exceptional levels to advance from the Euro 2024 group stages, focusing on their upcoming opener against Serbia. Speaking to German newspaper Bild recently, the 53-year-old hinted that not securing a trophy in Germany could potentially mark the end of his tenure as England manager. Since taking charge in 2016, Southgate has led England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020, and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. While his contract expires in December, the Football Association is eager for him to continue leading the team into the 2026 World Cup hosted in USA, Canada and Mexico.

During a media conference on Saturday, Gareth Southgate’s reflected on his tenure, stating, “I’ve been in this role for eight years, so I understand the challenges. Preparation is key, and we’re eagerly anticipating the start of the tournament. Teams like Germany and Spain have shown their quality recently and there are many strong contenders in this competition. We’ll need to excel to navigate our group and seize the chance to progress further.” Expressing his enthusiasm, Southgate added, “It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to lead your nation into such a major tournament. The excitement remains as high as it was before the Russia World Cup, if not more so.”
