Guido Burgstaller suffered a fractured skull after an unknown assailant attacked him in the center of Vienna, his club Rapid Vienna confirmed. The 35-year-old former Cardiff City forward reportedly received a serious head injury from the brutal strike. The incident took place over the weekend and Burgstaller received immediate medical attention at the scene before doctors transferred him to the hospital, where he will remain for several days.

Rapid Vienna stated they trust the authorities to quickly bring the responsible individual to justice. The club also revealed that the severity of Burgstaller’s injury would keep him sidelined for several months. Burgstaller had a brief stint with Cardiff in 2014, making only three appearances before moving to German club Nurnberg.

He also played for Schalke and St Pauli before returning to Rapid Vienna in 2022. His career, marked by several notable transfers across Europe, faced controversy in 2023 when he along with two other Austrian players received a national team exclusion after videos surfaced showing them singing homophobic chants following a 3-0 victory over rivals Austria Vienna.

The attack on Guido Burgstaller has shocked the football community with Rapid Vienna expressing concern for his well-being and hoping for a swift resolution to the case. The striker’s absence is a significant blow to the club, as he will be out for an extended period while recovering from his injury.
