Guinea Stadium Tragedy: At Least 56 Killed in Crowd Surge
Guinea second-largest city Nzérékoré witnessed a deadly crush at a football match, with at least 56 people killed, though many believe the toll is closer to 100. The incident reportedly began after a controversial decision by the referee, who sent off two players from the visiting team, Labé and awarded a penalty kick. This led to anger from Labé supporters, resulting in clashes and a chaotic scene. Tear gas was used by police as fans threw stones in protest.
As panic spread, thousands of spectators rushed toward a small exit leading to the fatal crush. Videos on social media show chaotic scenes outside the stadium with bodies scattered on the ground, including children. Local journalist Paul Sakouvogi described the stadium as overcrowded with only one exit which contributed to the tragic outcome. He also reported that police restricted access to the hospital treating the injured.
Prime Minister Oury Bah expressed condolences, calling the events “tragic” and promising full medical and psychological support for the injured. Guinea’s football body, Feguifoot condemned the incident emphasizing that football should unite, not cause tragedy. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute to the victims. The stadium where the incident occurred is an unfinished facility that has long been a work-in-progress.
This match was part of a tournament honoring President Mamady Doumbouya, who took power in a 2021 coup. The opposition has accused the authorities of bearing significant responsibility for the tragedy. The incident adds to growing concerns about the state of football in Guinea with increased scrutiny of figures like Feguifoot president Aboubacar Sampil, who has faced corruption allegations.
