Heimir Hallgrimsson, Republic of Ireland manager admitted he felt “lost for words” after England handed his side a devastating 5-0 Nations League defeat at Wembley. Although the Irish team delivered a solid first-half performance that kept the game scoreless, they unraveled in the second half after the referee sent off Liam Scales and Harry Kane converted the resulting penalty. The referee sent Scales off early in the second half for a foul on Jude Bellingham which allowed Kane to score the opening goal from the spot.

Reduced to 10 men, Ireland collapsed as Anthony Gordon and Conor Gallagher quickly added to England’s tally. Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis piled on further misery leaving Hallgrimsson visibly shaken. Reflecting on the disastrous sequence, the manager described it as “six minutes of madness.” He explained, “We lost our heads after the penalty and the red card, and everything fell apart from there.” Furthermore, Hallgrimsson pointed out the team’s fragile confidence and labeled the defeat “embarrassing” and “a slap in the face.”

The loss represents Ireland’s heaviest defeat by England and their worst overall since a 6-1 drubbing by Germany in 2012. Questioning the referee’s decision, Hallgrimsson argued, “A penalty was enough; issuing a second yellow wasn’t necessary.” Adding to the dismay, team captain Nathan Collins apologized to fans for the poor performance. “That second half is nowhere near our standard,” he admitted, emphasizing the urgent need for improvement.

As a result, Ireland now faces a relegation play-off to remain in the Nations League’s second tier. Despite the setback, Heimir Hallgrimsson highlighted the positives from the first half while conceding that his team struggled to regroup after the early second-half setbacks. Concluding on a somber note, he stated, “Excuses are pathetic after losing 5-0,” and urged his squad to bounce back stronger.
