Indonesia Triumphs 2-0 Over Saudi Arabia in World Cup Qualifiers

Indonesia secured a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on November 19, 2024 with Marselino Ferdinan scoring both goals. The match took place at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. Coach Shin Tae-yong made several changes to his starting lineup including bringing in Marselino Ferdinan to replace Yakob Sayuri. Marselino partnered with Ragnar Oratmangoen and Rafael Struick in the attack.

The first half saw Indonesia create multiple chances with Marselino hitting the post early on and Ragnar Oratmangoen’s shot blocked. In the 31st minute, Marselino gave Indonesia the lead with a powerful shot into the top corner after receiving a pass from Oratmangoen. Despite Saudi Arabia controlling possession at 74%, Indonesia was more efficient in their chances. The Green Falcons created six opportunities but struggled to break down Indonesia’s defense.

Mohammed Kannu’s long-range shot was the only real threat, but Maarten Paes saved it. In the second half, Saudi Arabia intensified their attacks, making several substitutions. However, Indonesia doubled their lead in the 57th minute through another goal from Marselino following a rebound after his initial shot was blocked. Saudi Arabia created a few chances, notably a header from Abdullah Al Hamdan in the 71st minute but Maarten Paes was up to the task.

Indonesia’s defense led by Jay Idzes, held firm throughout. Saudi Arabia applied late pressure including a powerful shot from Mohammed Kannu that was tipped over. However, Indonesia held firm and maintained their lead. The 2-0 win marked Indonesia’s first victory in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This victory lifted them to third place with one win and three draws from six games.
