Inter Miami Exits MLS Cup as Atlanta Clinches Decisive Win
Inter Miami led by Lionel Messi exited the MLS Cup play-offs unexpectedly in the first round, losing 3-2 to Atlanta United in the decisive game of their best-of-three series in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Despite Messi scoring, Atlanta’s Jamal Thiare struck twice in two minutes to reverse Miami’s initial lead which Matias Rojas had created from a rebound.
Messi equalized with a header but Bartosz Slisz clinched the win for Atlanta as Miami unsuccessfully appealed for a stoppage after their defender Tomas Aviles sustained an injury. Miami ended the regular season on a high, topping the Eastern Conference with a record 74 points in 34 games and winning the Supporters’ Shield. In contrast, Atlanta barely qualified for the play-offs, taking ninth place and then defeating Montreal on penalties in a wildcard match.
Atlanta now advances to face Orlando City in the Eastern Conference semi-finals while New York City will compete against the New York Red Bulls. The Eastern Conference final winner will meet the Western Conference champion in the MLS Cup final on December 7. Miami’s strong season recently earned them a place as one of 32 clubs set to participate in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised the club’s rapid ascent. Co-owned by David Beckham, Miami has further strengthened their squad with the signing of former Barcelona star Luiz Suarez, reuniting him with Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Reflecting on the season, Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino acknowledged that although they reached some goals, falling short in the play-offs proved disappointing. Alba expressed frustrations with the MLS Cup format, suggesting that a single final between conference champions would be fairer.
