Jerod Mayo Parts Ways with Patriots After One Season

The New England Patriots dismiss head coach Jerod Mayo following the final game of the season.

Jerod Mayo the head coach of the New England Patriots has parted ways with the team after just one season at the helm. The team informed Mayo of his dismissal shortly after their final regular-season game. They secured a 4-13 record by defeating a depleted Buffalo Bills squad. Mayo, 38, had previously enjoyed a successful career as a linebacker with the Patriots, winning one Super Bowl before transitioning to the coaching staff. He served as the inside linebackers coach from 2019 until January 2024.

The Patriots promoted him to head coach following Bill Belichick’s departure. Belichick the legendary coach who led the team to six Super Bowl titles, parted ways with the Patriots after an 8-9 record last season. Despite high hopes for Mayo’s leadership, the team struggled throughout the 2024 season. Patriots owner Robert Kraft explained that Mayo’s tenure ended due to his disappointing record and the team’s lack of progress.

“When other teams started requesting to interview him, I feared I would lose him and committed to making him our next head coach,” Kraft said. “Winning our season opener against Cincinnati only strengthened my conviction. Unfortunately, the trajectory of our team did not ascend as I had hoped.” After starting the season with a win against Cincinnati, the Patriots quickly faltered, suffering six straight losses.

Following a humiliating 34-0 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley in October, Jerod Mayo acknowledged the team’s struggles, calling them “soft across the board.” Rookie quarterback Drake Maye showed potential, but the Patriots continued to struggle. They ended the season with another six-game losing streak before their final win against Buffalo. The Patriots failed to improve, leaving them with the fourth pick in the upcoming NFL draft. They could have earned the top pick if they had finished with the worst record.
