Jose Mourinho Backs Ruben Amorim for Man United Top Job
Jose Mourinho reportedly urged Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim to consider the Manchester United managerial position. Amorim, who completed an internship with Mourinho’s High Performance Football Coaching course in 2018, frequently views the former United manager as a mentor. Amorim sought Mourinho’s advice immediately after Manchester United expressed interest in him.
Mourinho stated that Amorim possesses the skills needed to succeed at any top club, including Manchester United. With success at Sporting enhancing his reputation, Amorim has emerged as the front-runner for the United role after the club activated his £8.5 million (€10 million) release clause. However, Amorim reportedly plans to delay any move to England.
He wants to wait until after Sporting’s Champions League match against Manchester City in Lisbon next Tuesday. Previously, Amorim has praised Mourinho, calling him “one of a kind” and a unique figure in football coaching. As talks move forward, interim United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy plans to lead the team against Chelsea at Old Trafford this Sunday while Amorim’s potential transfer is finalized.
United also seeks to bring in Amorim’s Sporting backroom staff which would cost an additional £4.1 million. However, the club aims to promote Amorim’s assistant, Carlos Fernandez as the new head coach despite his relative youth at 29. Some reports indicate Sporting intends to enforce a 30-day notice period before releasing Amorim, though the coach believes he will arrive at Old Trafford by next week.
With Jose Mourinho’s endorsement and United’s persistent interest, the club appears prepared to expedite Amorim’s transfer as they work to secure stability and long-term success in their managerial role.
