Jose Mourinho has increased the pressure on Erik ten Hag by asserting that Manchester United are favorites to win the Europa League while downplaying Fenerbahce’s chances of defeating his former club in their upcoming match in Istanbul. United arrive in Turkey for their third European campaign match having drawn their opening two games against FC Twente and Porto.

Additionally, Ten Hag’s side is struggling in the Premier League, winning only three of their first eight matches. Mourinho pointed out that United have shown more patience with Ten Hag than they did during his own tenure where he won both the Europa League and League Cup in a two-and-a-half-year period. “They keep faith in the coach and support him, which means stability and trust,” he noted, contrasting it with his own experience.

He acknowledged the challenges of playing against Porto and Twente but emphasized that the team’s potential remains high despite the disappointing draws. Regarding the new format of the Europa League, Mourinho suggested that it allows top teams to qualify even with a few losses, stating, “I think they are in a stable situation.” He confidently named Manchester United and Tottenham as the top candidates for the tournament.

Ahead of Thursday’s match, Jose Mourinho positioned Ten Hag’s side as the underdogs, noting that Fenerbahce, currently fourth in the Turkish Super Lig, should not be underestimated. He expressed confidence that United would approach the game seriously, emphasizing the need for maximum strength. “When we play Manchester United, we need 35,000 fans behind us,” Mourinho stated, underscoring the importance of support in the upcoming clash.

This match promises to be a challenging one for both teams with high stakes for Ten Hag’s squad.
