The 36-year-old, who recently signed with A-League’s Western Sydney Wanderers in Septembe will be part of the team’s ownership as they prepare for their MLS debut in 2025 as the league’s 30th team. Mata expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth.”

This marks a significant step for both Mata and the expanding soccer landscape in the United States. In addition, San Diego FC announced that Mata is the “first active international soccer player to hold an ownership stake in Major League Soccer.” Throughout his career, Mata won six major trophies during his 11-year stint in the Premier League including a Champions League title with both Chelsea and Manchester United.

He also played a pivotal role in helping Spain secure victories in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. However, he has not featured for his national team since 2016.
