Alexander Sorloth scored a dramatic injury-time winner to give Atletico Madrid a 2-1 victory over Barcelona, replacing them at the top of La Liga. Barcelona took the lead in the 30th minute when Pedri after a clever link-up with Gavi, slotted past Jan Oblak. Despite dominating the game, Barcelona couldn’t maintain their advantage and Atletico capitalized on a mistake by Marc Casado. Rodrigo De Paul seized on the error and equalized for Atletico on the hour mark.
Barcelona had multiple chances to regain the lead but were unable to convert. Gavi missed a header from close range in the 25th minute and in the second half, Fermin Lopez was denied by Oblak while Pedri’s shot went just over the bar. Raphinha also hit the crossbar and missed a one-on-one opportunity leaving Barcelona to regret their missed chances. Atletico, who had already been under pressure from Barcelona’s constant attacks, found their moment of glory deep into injury time.
Nahuel Molina delivered a precise cross into the box which Alexander Sorloth slammed into the net to give Atletico the three points. The late goal secured Atletico’s 12th consecutive win across all competitions, sending them to the top of La Liga three points ahead of Barcelona, who have played one more match. With the loss, Barcelona could drop to third place if Real Madrid defeats Sevilla on Sunday. Atletico’s comeback marked a significant turnaround in their La Liga title race as they head into 2025 as league leaders after a remarkable late surge.
