Angel Correa delivered a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer for Atletico Madrid in a heated 1-1 derby draw against Real Madrid. The match halted for about 20 minutes midway through the second half after fans threw objects onto the pitch. Eder Militao put Real Madrid ahead in the 64th minute with a deflected strike. Moments later, Thibaut Courtois alerted officials to objects being thrown by Atletico fans behind his goal.
The referee stopped the match and sent the players to the dressing rooms while Diego Simeone and several players attempted to calm the home supporters before play resumed. Courtois made crucial saves and Real’s defense appeared set to secure a victory. However, Correa coming off the bench, raced onto a through ball rounded Courtois and scored.
The referee initially disallowed the goal but VAR overturned the decision, confirming Angel Correa was onside. The intensity escalated and Atletico’s Marcos Llorente received a red card for a late tackle on Fran Garcia after VAR upgraded his yellow card. Simeone criticized Courtois for celebrating the goal in front of Atletico fans, accusing him of provoking the crowd.
He also recalled past incidents when Real supporters threw objects at Courtois during his time at Atletico. Carlo Ancelotti defended the decision to suspend the match and remained optimistic despite the late equalizer, noting that Real extended their unbeaten La Liga run to 40 matches.
Real Madrid now sit second in La Liga, three points behind Barcelona while Atletico follow two points behind in third. Both Madrid clubs remain unbeaten in the league this season.
