Conor Gallagher started his Atletico Madrid career on a strong note in their 3-0 La Liga victory over Girona. Gallagher joined Atletico from Chelsea on Wednesday for approximately £33 million and made his debut as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s match. With Atletico already holding a 2-0 lead when Gallagher stepped onto the pitch, Antoine Griezmann had opened the scoring with a well-taken free-kick in the first half and Marcos Llorente doubled the lead with a spectacular long-range strike in the second half.
Earlier in the week, Atletico celebrated Gallagher’s arrival with a grand unveiling attended by thousands of fans, complete with a light show and pitchside flamethrowers. Although Gallagher’s debut was relatively low-key due to the comfortable lead, he seamlessly slotted in alongside his new teammates helping maintain control of the match and effectively linking play in midfield.
The game included some controversy, as Atletico players grew frustrated when Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga avoided a red card despite handling the ball outside the penalty area in the first half. However, their frustration dissipated quickly when Griezmann curled a shot from the resulting free-kick to give Atletico the lead. Llorente then added another goal with a powerful strike from distance and Koke sealed the victory in stoppage time by converting a Llorente pass from close range.
Conor Gallagher, who impressed in his brief debut, might earn his first start for Atletico Madrid when they face Espanyol on Wednesday at 20:30 BST. The victory over Girona marks a positive beginning for Gallagher at his new club and fans eagerly anticipate how he will continue to integrate into the team.
