Leah Williamson Remains Positive Amid Criticism
Leah Williamson, Arsenal and England defender says she is in a “good place” despite facing criticism on social media this season. The 27-year-old, who returned from an ACL injury in January, struggled for form early in the campaign, contributing to Arsenal’s seven-point deficit behind Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City. Despite some mixed performances including an error leading to a goal in both of England’s friendlies against Germany and South Africa in October, Williamson remains positive.
“I feel like for the first time I am in a place where I feel like a real footballer again,” she told BBC Sport. “I can train every day, and I love football.” Williamson acknowledged that criticism is part of the game but emphasized that she listens to feedback from her trusted circle including her managers and teammates, rather than engaging with social media negativity.
While she still maintains social media accounts, she admitted that sometimes the online criticism can be overwhelming. However, Williamson has learned to block out unwanted opinions and focuses on the support from those around her. Williamson also spoke about the challenges faced by former manager Jonas Eidevall, who resigned after a difficult start to the season.
She expressed sympathy for Eidevall, noting that public scrutiny in football is harsh but inevitable. Under interim manager Renee Slegers, Arsenal seems to have turned a corner, winning four of their last five games. Williamson praised Slegers’ approach, saying her focus on individual connections and confidence-building has had a positive impact on the team.
Looking ahead, Leah Williamson remains optimistic with Arsenal’s next challenge being a crucial north London derby against Tottenham on Saturday.
