Lee Carsley Calls Up Young Stars for England Squad

Lee Carsley, in his first squad as England’s interim manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024 has actively called up several young talents. He selected Angel Gomes (Lille), Tino Livramento (Newcastle), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) and Noni Madueke (Chelsea), all of whom he coached during his time as England Under-21 manager.

Additionally, Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, who missed out on England’s preliminary Euro 2024 squad and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire return to the squad. Carsley, who led England’s Under-21s to the 2023 European Championship victory, continues to show trust in youth. He included six players from that Under-21 squad, such as Gomes, Madueke, Gibbs-White, Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Levi Colwill in the senior squad.

Angel Gomes, 23, who left Manchester United for Lille in 2020 could play a crucial role in controlling the midfield, an area where England has struggled. After recently recovering from a head injury, Gomes is expected to bring creativity and determination to the team. Carsley also handed Gibbs-White his first senior cap following an impressive start to the Premier League season.

However, Lee Carsley notably left out Arsenal’s Ben White, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale. Injuries sidelined Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, while Kieran Trippier announced his retirement from international football.

With an aim to make his mark, Carsley will lead England in the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland on 7 September and Finland on 10 September. His squad blends experience with youthful promise, reflecting his confidence in the new generation of English talent.
