Lee Carsley’s debut as England’s interim manager started with a misstep but ended on a high as his side beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Dublin. Initially turning towards the wrong dugout, Carsley quickly settled into the role as England delivered a dynamic and attacking performance, a sharp contrast to their more cautious approach under former coach Gareth Southgate.

The victory was marked by a refreshing style of play with England creating more chances and shots than in any of their Euro 2024 matches. Harry Kane, criticized after the Euros showed glimpses of his best form supported by Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka, who consistently pushed forward. Gordon eager to prove himself after limited minutes in the summer tested the Irish goalkeeper several times and contributed to England’s fluid attack.

Declan Rice taunted by the Irish crowd for switching allegiance, responded with a goal and an assist for Jack Grealish. England’s midfield featuring Kobbie Mainoo and Trent Alexander-Arnold was more forward-thinking, with Rice playing a more advanced role compared to the Euros. While the team showed promise, the second-half performance dipped slightly, indicating that there is still room for growth.

Lee Carsley, who didn’t sing the national anthem pre-match due to personal reasons, called the day “one of the proudest” of his career. With this strong start, England heads confidently into their next game against Finland but the search for a full-time manager continues.
