Leeds United Edges Sheffield United 2-0 in Yorkshire Derby

Leeds United climbed to second in the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at Elland Road marking a notable derby win. Both teams honored former Blades defender George Baldock, who tragically passed away at the age of 31 last week before the match. Leeds dominated the first half but failed to convert their chances with Largie Ramazani hitting the outside of the post and Brenden Aaronson coming close multiple times.

The breakthrough came in the 69th minute when Pascal Struijk scored from a corner marking the first time Sheffield United had conceded in over 11 hours of play. Substitute Mateo Joseph sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute expertly finishing a pass from Joel Piroe. This win allowed Leeds to leapfrog Sheffield United on goal difference as both teams now sit on 19 points.

The Blades experienced their first league defeat of the season while Sunderland leads the table ahead of their match against Hull City on Sunday. Leeds had the edge in a tightly contested first quarter, with Junior Firpo threatening down the left. Sheffield United relied on long balls for offensive opportunities but struggled to create clear chances. After a lackluster second half for the visitors, Leeds finally found the net when Struijk scored with a left-footed effort.

This goal ended Sheffield’s impressive defensive streak. After the match, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s mature performance, emphasizing their balance between attack and defense. Conversely, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder acknowledged Leeds’ superiority and expressed disappointment in his team’s performance.

Baldock’s memory loomed large throughout the match with both teams reflecting on his contributions and impact during his career. Baldock played 219 times for Sheffield United winning promotion to the Premier League twice.
