PAE G.S. Diagoras 1905 (Greek: ΠΑΕ Γ.Σ. Διαγόρας 1905) is a professional football club based in Rhodes city, Greece, founded in 1905. The club takes its name from the ancient Rhodian boxer, Diagoras. The team’s history spans Ottoman rule, Dodecanese independence in 1912, and Italian occupation, with local matches during Balkan Wars until 1947 union with Greece.
The club’s extensive social, cultural, athletic, and particularly patriotic activities led the occupying Italian fascist authorities to dissolve it in 1929. Diagoras was reconstituted in 1945, shortly before the liberation of Rhodes and its union with Greece. The club first joined the Beta Ethniki (second national division) in its inaugural 1962-63 season. Diagoras played in the Alpha Ethniki (first national division) from 1986 to 1989 and reached the semi-finals of the Greek Cup in 1987, losing to OFI.
Diagoras returned to Beta Ethniki in 2008 and remained until 2012. Since 2020, the club has been competing in the Super League 2. In the 2019-2020 season, Diagoras secured third place in the Football League and earned promotion to Super League 2.
Playout Drama: Panathinaikos B and Olympiacos B Relegated
While Diagoras enjoys the luxury of safety, the playouts have not been as kind to some of the league’s more prominent names. Both Panathinaikos B and Olympiacos B have faced the harsh reality of relegation. Their drop from the league underscores the competitive nature of the playouts and the fine margins that can determine a team’s fate.
