Manchester City Dominates Barcelona, Wins 2-0

Manchester City launched their Women’s Champions League campaign with a stunning 2-0 victory over defending champions Barcelona at Joie Stadium, showcasing their potential in the tournament. In particular, England defender Naomi Layzell stood out with a goal and an assist, helping City to a dominant performance that left Barcelona struggling to cope on a chilly Manchester evening.

City manager Gareth Taylor praised the team’s intensity, especially in the first half, stating, “It’s right up there, definitely,” in terms of his best performances since taking charge. Moreover, he noted that City created enough opportunities to have led 3-0 or 4-0 by halftime and expressed confidence in their ability to challenge for the title, saying, “Yes,” when asked if they could win the competition.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain described the win as a “huge statement” to Europe’s elite, emphasizing that City deserved the victory and that it would instill confidence for the rest of the season. Notably, the team’s aggressive pressing unsettled Barcelona from the start with Layzell’s dynamic play on the right and Lauren Hemp’s threat on the left making a significant impact.

Barcelona manager Pere Sunyer acknowledged City’s strong performance, admitting his players struggled to handle their pressing style. Consequently, he remarked, “Manchester City will be right up there” in the competition. Furthermore, this match marked only the second time in 80 games that Barcelona failed to score, highlighting City’s defensive strength.

As City looks ahead to future matches against Hammarby and St. Polten, Sunyer remains optimistic about Barcelona’s chances to improve. However, City’s impressive display has raised expectations and set the tone for a competitive tournament ahead.
