Manchester United Board Meets to Discuss Ten Hag's Future

Manchester United held a significant monthly board meeting in central London on Tuesday which the BBC reported could greatly impact the future of manager Erik ten Hag. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe attended the six-hour meeting and media covered his arrival and departure. Despite the meeting’s importance, the club has remained silent about its outcome.

This follows last summer’s uncertainty regarding Ten Hag’s position after the FA Cup final against Manchester City, where speculation about his potential sacking persisted. Ultimately, the club decided to keep him, extended his contract until 2026 and made substantial changes to his coaching staff including the departures of assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag and coach Steve McClaren.

In July, Dan Ashworth and Omar Berrada took up key roles as sporting director and chief executive, respectively, bringing much-needed structure to the club after Ratcliffe’s part purchase in December. Following an eighth-place finish which marked United’s worst performance in the Premier League era, optimism began to fade. This decline was exacerbated by a 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on September 29.

Questions about Ten Hag’s future resurfaced, although club officials indicated that he would continue for upcoming matches against Porto and Aston Villa. Ratcliffe recently commented that he supports Ten Hag but stressed that the management team must make critical decisions about the club’s future. United’s disappointing performance continued with a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

This result left them in 14th place in the Premier League with only eight points from seven games. After the match, Ten Hag expressed disappointment about the team’s performance but maintained open communication with ownership. As of now, Ten Hag remains in charge and is taking a customary break during the international window. He expects to return to prepare for the upcoming match against Brentford on October 19.
