Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has highlighted the club’s ongoing injury problems as a significant hindrance to their performance. Last season, United faced a staggering 45 injuries—more than any other team in the Premier League. Currently, they are grappling with the absence of 10 first-team players for Thursday’s Europa League draw against Fenerbahce with nine sidelined due to injuries.
While veteran defender Jonny Evans might return for Sunday’s clash with West Ham, doubts loom over Brazilian winger Antony, who was stretchered off after an injury with no one near him during the match. Additionally, defensive players Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro and Tyrell Malacia have yet to feature this season and Mason Mount has already missed significant time after participating in just five matches.
Ten Hag expressed frustration, stating, “Yes, it holds us back in our levels and also in our position in the league. When you don’t have the players available, you can’t line up the best team.” Despite Manchester United’s attempt to improve their medical situation by hiring Gary O’Driscoll from Arsenal last year, they have struggled to resolve these issues.
Currently sitting 12th in the Premier League and 21st in the expanded Europa League, United’s recent form includes three away draws and a home win against Brentford, following a disappointing defeat to Tottenham. Ten Hag believes it is unfair to evaluate his team’s performance based on that loss, particularly given they played with ten men for part of the match.
He emphasized that the team has shown resilience and determination, noting their competitive spirit in tough games. As they prepare to face West Ham, Ten Hag is hopeful for improvements but recognizes the critical need for player availability to fulfill their potential.
