Manchester United Thrash Barnsley 7-0 in EFL Cup

Manchester United enjoyed a “perfect night” with their largest victory under Erik ten Hag, advancing to the EFL Cup last-16 with a commanding 7-0 win over League One side Barnsley. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen each scored twice while Antony added a first-half penalty making it a comprehensive rout. This victory marked United’s biggest win since their 9-0 triumph over Southampton in February 2021 when stadiums were empty due to Covid-19.

Ten Hag described the night as ideal, highlighting the team’s success in executing their game plan, entertaining the fans, and making progress with their playing style. Despite Barnsley’s enthusiastic support, the team struggled to compete and only managed a notable moment when manager Darrell Clarke showcased impressive skill with a ball control trick after the whistle.

Manchester United also saw £50.5m signing Manuel Ugarte make his first start and the Uruguayan’s composed performance reinforced Ten Hag’s confidence in his squad’s potential. Rashford continued his scoring streak from recent matches, scoring twice after Ten Hag had hoped he would start delivering goals consistently. Rashford’s confidence shone through with his first goal.

He received Garnacho’s precise pass, outmaneuvered defender Marc Roberts and fired past goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina. Garnacho, who also scored twice contributed significantly including a stunning solo goal after sprinting half the length of the field. Antony, under pressure to prove his worth following his £82m transfer, confidently converted a penalty and had a strong showing.

Eriksen, unexpectedly still with United post-transfer window contributed with two goals marking his first multi-goal game since 2018 with Tottenham. Despite the positive result, Ten Hag remains focused on long-term goals and refuses to be swayed by the current success.
