Manchester United Welcomes Ruben Amorim as New Manager

Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach following Erik ten Hag’s departure. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, currently with Sporting CP will officially join United on November 11 and has signed a contract through June 2027. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took on the interim role will continue to lead the team for three more games. Widely regarded as one of Europe’s top young coaches, Amorim has built a strong track record since launching his managerial career in 2018.

He began with third-tier Casa Pia and quickly advanced to Braga’s first team where he led them to a Taca da Liga win and Braga’s first away victory over Benfica in 65 years. Sporting then made him the most expensive coaching hire in Portuguese history, paying £8.5 million to secure his move from Braga. Amorim’s immediate impact at Sporting included guiding them to their first league title in 19 years in 2020-21 and securing a second title last season, despite major player departures.

Manchester United paid Sporting €11 million (£9.25 million) to release Amorim from his contract. Expected to earn around £10 million per year, he will rank among the Premier League’s higher-paid managers. United values his dynamic, youth-focused playing style, strong personality and adaptability—qualities the club considers essential for leading the team forward under its new structure, directed by Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Amorim will debut as United’s head coach on November 24 against Ipswich Town in the Premier League followed by a Europa League home game against Bodo/Glimt. His appointment marks the start of United’s Ineos era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ownership as the club aims for renewed stability and success.
