Martin Zubimendi’s stunning volley from outside the penalty area secured a 1-0 victory for Spain against Denmark in their first home game since winning Euro 2024 in the UEFA Nations League. The European champions seemed destined for a frustrating draw until Zubimendi scored in the 79th minute. This goal marked Martin Zubimendi’s first international goal.

The Real Sociedad midfielder, who declined an opportunity to join Liverpool over the summer, struck a first-time shot from about 22 yards out which deflected off a defender before finding the net.  Denmark’s goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, who had kept the score level with two excellent saves against Spain’s captain Álvaro Morata will feel disappointed with the goal.

Schmeichel also thwarted a decent attempt from 17-year-old Lamine Yamal earlier in the match.  Before kick-off, a festive atmosphere filled the stadium as Spain proudly paraded the Euro 2024 trophy which they won by defeating England 2-1 in the final held in Berlin on July 14.  This victory allowed Spain to leapfrog Denmark to the top of Group A4 in the Nations League with seven points.

In contrast, Denmark now in second place with six points will face Switzerland next. Spain will look to continue their strong form when they host Serbia on Tuesday aiming to build on their momentum after a successful tournament and a solid start to their Nations League campaign.  Meanwhile, Denmark will seek to bounce back from this defeat as they prepare for their upcoming match.
